We know that the best way to prevent a hangover is not to start drinking in the first place. But even if you have had one glass too many, it doesn’t have to mean a thick head: With our tips you are well prepared before, during and after the New Year’s Party.
- planning is everything – Make sure you know how you’re going to get to and from the party beforehand. With a definite end in sight, it’s easier to control yourself – half an hour before you head home, it’s better to turn down that cocktail.
- freshly rested – Those who get enough sleep before a long night out not only last longer – they also stay sober longer. With tired minds alcohol does not go faster into the blood – however the sleepy party guest imagines to notice the Promille content in the Prosecco more strongly. And that can end embarrassingly.
- fundamentally important – normally, we eat a body-conscious, balanced and low-calorie diet. Before the holidays it may go however calmly times correctly solid. Because fat and protein-rich food puts on the stomach mucous membranes and lets the alcohol pass more slowly into the blood.
- sugar shock – The precautionary trick does NOT work with sugary foods. Instead, the opposite effect can occur: Sugar supports the formation of degradation products of alcohol – and these later cause the headache.
- secret tip asparagus – The consumption of the green stalk vegetable is to accelerate the alcohol dismantling. Artichokes are also said to have a liver-supporting effect. There is no scientific evidence for this, but both foods are healthy. And as we all know, trial and error makes perfect.
- old but gold – The old tip, which our mothers already gave us, does not come from somewhere. If you drink a glass of water after every glass of alcohol, you prevent the worst from happening in the first place.
- be light – The rule of thumb: the darker the alcohol, the worse the hangover the next morning. Instead of brandy, red wine and rum, you’re better off toasting with light-colored varieties. These contain fewer toxins. Vodka or white wine are best.
- Quality time – As is often the case, it’s also a good idea to opt for quality over quantity. Normally, the more expensive the alcohol, the more often it has been distilled, and the less methanol it contains – the substance that otherwise causes considerable discomfort when our bodies break it down.
- light? Better not – Figure consciousness or not: Don’t drink long drinks with light sodas. They make you drunk even faster. This has not been scientifically proven, but you shouldn’t necessarily tempt your fate, should you?
- nibbling fun – Salt sticks, nuts & Co., which are often served at parties, you should not spurn. The salt provides the body with electrolytes that the alcohol has previously deprived it of.
Detox after the party
- fumigation
A new insider tip among partygoers is incense. In tablet form (you can get it at the pharmacy), it’s supposed to help with brain swelling that causes headaches. If you already know you’ll be partying for several days in a row, you can start taking it three days in advance – but for a minor hangover, three tablets will do. - fresh air
As hard as it is to get out of bed, a little fresh air can work wonders. That’s because oxygen helps our bodies break down the toxins contained in alcohol more quickly. A short walk through the park is often enough to make you feel a little better. If it doesn’t work at all, an open window can also help. - drink, drink, drink
Not an insider tip, but all the more effective for it: In addition to water, lemonade or coconut water also help. Both provide additional electrolytes. The main thing is to stay away from alcohol. Because the supposedly good trick of fighting fire with fire (or beer with beer) only delays the hangover until it strikes – all the worse. - Hangover Food – You’re hungry? Then you’ve had the worst of it. How about a smoothie made of bananas, honey and almond milk? This provides us with calcium and magnesium and quickly gives the body back energy due to the fructose it contains.
